Ingredients

Apples
  • 3 large apples Peeled, cored, and sliced into wedges.
Butter and sugars
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter Melted.
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
Spices and flavoring
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp vanilla extract
Serving
  • 1 vanilla ice cream For serving.
  • 1 caramel sauce For serving.

Equipment

  • 1 air fryer

Method

Coat the apples
  1. Toss apple wedges with melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until evenly coated. The coating should look glossy and cling to the wedges.
Air fry
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375F. Preheating helps the wedges start caramelizing right away.
  2. Arrange the apple slices in a single layer in the basket. Leave space between wedges so they brown instead of steaming.
  3. Air fry at 375F for 10-12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Cook until caramelized and tender with visible browned edges.
  4. If needed, work in batches so the apples stay in a single layer. Repeat until all coated wedges are caramelized and tender.
Serve
  1. Serve the apples warm over vanilla ice cream, then drizzle with caramel sauce. The ice cream should begin to melt as the warm apples hit it.

Notes

For best caramelization, use a single layer in the air fryer and don’t skip the halfway shake. Store leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days and rewarm at 350F for 3-5 minutes; freezing is not recommended because the apples can soften too much. For a dairy-free version, swap the butter for vegan butter and use dairy-free vanilla ice cream.
